The sun blinded him, and he took a step back, feeling the sand underneath his feet. Funashima, his mind whispered. He tightened his grip around the comfortable burden of his sword.

Opposite, his rival watched him with eyes like a hawk’s. They stood in a moment of suspended stillness in the brink of destiny.

Then Musashi blinked, and his world righted itself. Across the football field, the figure rearranged itself into Kotaro’s distinctive profile. He turned back and walked towards his teammates, trying and failing to suppress the shiver sneaking up his spine.
