I stumbled upon Robert Aickman’s works in the horror Goodreads rabbit hole. Last December, his book was on sale, so I thought, why not? Of the four books available, I picked Cold Hand in Mine.

I love it. You know those nightmares that start out normally? You wake up, have breakfast, go to work … and as the day goes by you begin to notice strange details that slowly pile up, until finally you realise that you’re trapped in a nightmare. That’s how Aickman’s “strange stories” feel like.

There are eight stories in the collection. Most exist in the mundane horror spectrum, which is one of my favourite horror subgenres. The book is prefaced with a quote from Sacheverell Sitwell: “In the end it is the mystery that lasts and not the explanation”. That quote perfectly sums up Aickman’s attitude in writing. Barely any explanation is given for what is actually going on. Even those that seem straightforward, upon rereading, reveal alternative interpretations and raise more questions.

A couple of days ago, I had a dream about Eyeshield 21.

It wasn't weird, since ES21 is one of my first and long-lasting fandoms. What happened in the dream though, was super duper weird.

The starring roles were played by Seijuro Shin and Himuro "Maria" Maruko. They were dating.

Even with my strong tendency and love for rarepair and crackship, this is a pairing that never, not even once, in more than a decade in the fandom, crossed my mind.

Like, Shin/Maruko? Shin/Maruko? Shin/Maruko?

The only thing that I could come up with was ... they do look alike?

So, they were walking home, and Maruko was wondering if she should accept an athletic scholarship abroad. Shin encouraged her to do it (hey, at least he was somewhat IC). In the next scene, they were lying on futon in Maruko's living room, in front of the tv. Maruko's granddad(!) was there too. They kept arguing about the scholarship, and her granddad was so annoyed by their voices that he kicked them out of the room. So now these two had to sleep in Maruko's room, where there was, naturally, only one bed.

I couldn't make this up.

Anyway, Maruko ended up going, and the last scene of my dream was Maruko doing sit-ups, smiling and thinking about Shin.

I'm still so curious about where this dream came from.

I watched the first two seasons as they came out, then life got in the way. Finally during the Christmas and New Year holiday I decided to binge-watch the entire series. I fell in love all over again ... only to be massively let down by that ending.

So here are several thoroughly self-indulgent fix-its.

I posted 36,721 words this year! Slightly more than double last year's word count.

This year I also finally finished and posted my first longfic, o prolong now the sorrow. Also I finally finished that James Bond/Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy crossover fic.

Not bad, all in all.

Hello dear writer! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for offering one of my requests!

You can find me on AO3 as [archiveofourown.org profile] derwent  You can find past exchange letters here.

I'm just really happy that one of my requests get offered, so honestly, as long as you heed the DNWs and include my requested characters, I'll be excited about what you write!

But, if like me, you find prompts helpful as a starting point, I do have some suggestions. Feel free to take inspiration from them - or not! Some of the requests are shorter than the others, but that doesn't mean I want them any less. Also, most of my DNWs are more of the just-in-case variety -- not likely to come up, but just to be on the safe side.

References to canonical pairings are totally fine. Feel free to write in unrequested characters, OCs, or background pairings if it would help the story.

If you have any questions or need clarification, please don't hesitate to reach me through the mods!

  • Title from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds's 'Sweetheart Come', which despite being too romantic in its wording, the sentiment definitely fits this pairing.

  • The only reason I decided to watch this show was so I could cross it off my list. So of course, I fell hook, line, and sinker
  • Everyone's pettiness is A++
  • Love the costume and scenery porn
  • Being a gen-leaning fan, I wasn't expecting to ship anyone ... and I ended up shipping Voiello/Sister Mary

Day 10: Drop your OTP or small ensemble from the fandom they're in into another fandom - how do they do?

Medium's The Dubois to The Conjuring universe. They'll do perfectly well! Allison and Lorraine will be best friends right away, and the older woman can help Allison in sorting out her feelings about her gift. Joe and Ed can commiserate over having psychic wives.

Aside from the fluff, I think it'll be intriguing if they have to work together on a case. Possesion's not really a thing in Medium - there's only a couple of episodes iirc, and those mostly involve dead souls taking over a living person's body, not the demonic kind found in The Conjuring. Plus Allison is sceptical of religion, so it's highly likely that at first she'll think the Warrens are frauds. There's also the issue that Allison works with the police, while The Warrens don't. How will they divide the investigation work?

Huh, maybe I should write that fic.

Day 9: Drop the cast of a fandom you follow into a reality tv show - who/what/why? If you need a list of reality TV show examples, click here.

The cast of Eyeshield 21 into Takeshi's Castle. Why? Because it'd be so fucking hilarious, that's why. Besides, Takeshi's Castle already fits the manga's wacky tone perfectly.

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

Like other genres, it all depends on the execution. I enjoy both crack and crack treated seriously.

Example? Hm, I haven't posted any crack!fic yet (though I'm working on one). But here's two of my favourites:
  • The Murderer is Among Us Now by Emmy. To deal with COVID lockdown, Poirot invites his friends to play the game Among Us. It's as wonderful as the premise suggests.
  • ...Влюбляюсь без отпечатков by AgniRo. Caveat: I read it through google translate, so I'm sure there are nuances I missed, plus the obvious mistakes from machine translation. That said, the premise is really intriguing: Mallory is attacked with magic and falls into a coma. Q and Bond have to save him by ... jumping into Ralph Fiennes's other movies and save his characters. It's amazing, and I really wish someone would translate it into English.
