Summary: The news of Sister Antonia’s demise arrived right after Voiello finished his breakfast.
The news of Sister Antonia’s demise arrived right after Voiello finished his breakfast.
Truthfully, he could not claim to be surprised or shocked by the news. On the contrary, he was somewhat expecting it – had been so, ever since he watched the Pope got down to his knees and prayed in the rain last night.
Being a man of his position, Voiello looked at claims of miracles with extremely suspicious eyes. Many of the tricks the Holy Father performed could be explained by logic. Take his reveal that he knew of Voiello’s conspiracy against him. Gutierrez, or that woman Esther, might have confessed, and from there it was a simple case of reasoning to deduce Voiello’s role in the whole ordeal.
Even Antonia’s death could be explained as mere coincidence. A person of her age was at risk of heart attack, it was a well-known fact. The shock of the Pope’s denunciation of her character no doubt added to the risk.
And yet.
His feet brought him to the now-familiar basketball ring, where Sister Mary stood alone. The orange ball lay on the ground, unnoticed.
‘Have you heard?’ He asks, though from her drawn expression he knew that she had.
‘Of Antonia’s death? Yes.’
Voiello nodded and took his usual seat. After a moment, Sister Mary joined him.
‘Do you truly believe he is a saint?’
Steel, her gaze was. ‘Do you still not?’
He looked away. Sighed. ‘Great. He was already insufferable, now he’ll be even more so.’
Her laughter, ringing unexpectedly, was a balm to his troubled mood.
